Analamandreky Mangrove Restoration
Mangrove restoration on Madagascar's northwest coast, protecting marine ecosystems and providing sustainable livelihoods for fishing communities near Mahabana
The story behind Analamandreky Mangrove Restoration.
Located east of Cape Saint Andre on Madagascar's northwest coast, the Analamandreky project restores degraded mangrove forests across a complex network of channels, sand bars, and mud flats at the mouth of Manombo Bay. The area's mangrove ecosystem supports diverse marine life including rays, barracudas, and sharks, as well as large flocks of greater flamingos and the conservation-critical Madagascar flying fox.
Decades of charcoal production and wood harvesting caused significant deforestation, eroding soil into waterways and destroying habitats that fishing communities depend on. Since 2015, over 4.5 million trees have been planted, restoring storm protection, erosion control, and fish spawning habitats. An average of 12 employees work on-site monthly, providing steady incomes that support healthcare, nutrition, and education for local families.
