Buying credits is simple.
Understanding them shouldn't be hard.

A carbon credit is a tradeable certificate representing the reduction or removal of one tonne of CO₂ from the atmosphere. When you buy credits through CarbonCert, we retire them on a public registry in your company's name — permanently. They can never be resold or double-counted.

Carbon credits — FAQs

One carbon credit represents one metric tonne of CO₂ either removed from the atmosphere or prevented from entering it. When we retire a credit on your behalf, it is permanently cancelled on the public registry — meaning it can never be resold, double-counted, or reused by anyone else. You receive a certificate with the serial numbers as proof.

We source credits from four internationally recognised standards: Verra's Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), Gold Standard, UNFCCC Certified Emission Reductions (CER), and the UK Woodland Carbon Code. Each standard has independent third-party auditing and public registries where retirements can be verified by anyone.

Our self-serve pricing starts at £15 per tonne, dropping to £12 per tonne for orders of 100+ tonnes. For volumes above 250 tonnes, we offer custom quotes with project selection and volume discounts. If you prefer ongoing monthly offsetting rather than one-off purchases, our subscription plans start from £4.99 per employee per month.

We retire the credits on the relevant public registry under your company name within 5 working days. You receive a PDF retirement certificate with project names, credit serial numbers, and direct links to the registry entries. A public verification URL is also created so clients, auditors, or procurement teams can independently confirm your offset.

Yes. Verified carbon credits form the offsetting component of a compliant Carbon Reduction Plan, which is mandatory for UK central government contracts over £5 million. The retirement certificate and registry links we provide are the evidence procurement teams need. If you also need the full Carbon Reduction Plan document, our audit-based subscription plans include one.

Avoidance credits fund projects that prevent emissions from happening — renewable energy, methane capture, or cookstove distribution. Removal credits fund projects that extract CO₂ already in the atmosphere — reforestation, peatland restoration, or direct air capture. Both are legitimate, but removal credits are increasingly preferred by frameworks like SBTi for long-term net zero targets.

For credibility, yes. The UK Green Claims Code requires that environmental claims are substantiated and not misleading. Buying credits without knowing your footprint or taking steps to reduce it is exactly the kind of claim regulators scrutinise. We offer a free online carbon audit that takes around 10 minutes if you need a starting point.

One-off credit purchases are for businesses that know their footprint and want to offset a specific number of tonnes — no ongoing commitment. Subscription plans are for businesses that want continuous monthly offsetting, tree planting, a trust badge for their website, an ISO-aligned certificate, and a public verification page. Many customers start with a credit purchase and upgrade to a plan later.

For self-serve orders under 250 tonnes, we allocate credits from our current portfolio of verified projects. For bulk orders above 250 tonnes, you can request specific project types, geographies, or standards. Contact us for a custom quote.

Retirement is the permanent cancellation of a carbon credit on its registry. Once retired, the credit is removed from circulation — it cannot be transferred, resold, or counted by anyone else. This is what separates a legitimate offset from a paper exercise. Every credit we sell is retired, not just purchased and held.
